The Atomic SS1 - Good BC inflator-and-regulator

Diving GearI'm a big fan of combined BC inflator-and-regulator devices. The concept has stood the test of time and has been around now for more than 20 years. Surprisingly, these useful gadgets have been produced by relatively few manufacturers, namely Scubapro and AP Valves. However, Atomic Aquatics has also the Atomic SS1 BC inflator-and-regulator device available.

Before we take a look at the Atomic SS1 in detail, why would you use that gizmo? The main advantage are that they decrease the number of low-pressure hoses from your first stage, thus reducing weight for the diver on the move, removing a possible point of failure and clear away clutter – how many times do you see an octopus regulator trailing down by the diver's side, getting snagged on a wreck or free-flowing just after the diver hits the water? There is one consideration you should be aware of, though: if you have to share gas as a donor with a buddy, you should give them your primary regulator while you switch to the combined unit. This is because the hose is quick short and also you need to retain close control on your buoyancy.

A heavy schedule of dive trips a few months back gave me the ideal opportunity to put the Atomic SS1 to the test, and I have to report it's a very good piece of kit.

Fitting the Atomic SS1 to my BC was simple and took less than five minutes. Underwater, the inflator whacks gas into your BC with a punch, but at the same time is completely controllable. I didn't need to use the regulator mechanism in an emergency situation, but I did exchange it for my primary valve during many safety stops and it also breathes pretty well – in fact, it was hardly distinguishable from a standard second stage. The mouthpiece is a little small, but this could be easily swapped for one of your liking. Even though it was tested in some strong currents, there wasn't a hint of anything suggesting a free-flow.

The Atomic SS1 features a 'seat-saving orrifice', meaning it has a service interval of twice that of a normal regulator at two years. All the metal bits in its workings are manufactured using 316 stainless steel, further ensuring its reliability. It is supplied with a variety of hose size fittings that Atomic claims will fit all BCs on the market. If you wish to carry the Atomic SS1 along with the rest of your regulator, then it can be easily unscrewed and separated from your BC hose.

It may not be for the die-hard conventional diver, but most training agencies incorporate these devices into their sports-diver training. And with the current clearing sale at Diver-Supply of US$ 224 you get a very good BC inflator-and-regulator device. See here Atomic SS1
